Preferred Name Policy

It is the policy of the University of Missouri that any student may choose to identify themselves within the university community with a preferred first and/or middle name that differs from their legal name.

Instances where the preferred name will be used include, but are not limited to:

  1. Class rosters
  2. Residence hall rosters
  3. University identification cards
  4. Transcripts (if requested in myZou)
  5. Diplomas (if requested in myZou)
  6. Wherever it is not necessary for the legal name to be used

If you are a student employee, you will need to contact your department’s HR representative to change your name in the system.

Students are also to update their preferred name in MyZou.

The path to update a preferred name in myZou is:
Student Center>Personal Information>Names>Add a New Name.

NOTE: The Human Resource computing system overrides ID card names. If students who are employed by MU wish to have a preferred name on ID cards, they need to contact their department MU HR officer. Students who have questions may contact the University Registrar.

Nondiscrimination Policies
